Road trip in Catalonia

Rakastan impulsiivisia käänteitä: sitä, kun matkasuunnitelmia voi muuttaa fiiliksen mukaan. Niinpä päätimme vuokrata auton ja suunnata katsomaan Barcelonan lähialueita. Ensin ajoimme Sitgesiin, pieneen rantakaupunkiin, jossa pysähdyimme hörppäämään reissukahvit ja syöttämään tyttömme. Ihastelimme turkoosinsinisenä kiiltävää merta ja kävelimme rantabulevardia.

Matka sai kuitenkin vielä jatkua. Nyt cava-viinitilojen kylkeen, Penedésin alueelle, jonnekin sinne, missä vuoristokolmiot rikkovat tasankoa.

Sinne tänne ajellessamme viinilaaksojen halki kohti yhä kauniimpaa ja kauniimpaa maaseutua, päädyimme viimein pieneen Torrelles de Foix -nimiseen kylään, josta mieheni löysi Bed & breakfast -majoituksen.

Arienella-majapaikka saa ehdottomasti täydet viisi tähteä niin sijainnin, palvelun kuin tunnelman osalta.

Me saimme suloisen, maalaisromanttisen huoneen. Sen näköalaterassilla tuijottelimme auringonlaskua kylmä, kupliva cava-lasillinen kädessä. Voisiko enää enempää toivoa?

Sitten se hiljaisuus! Ainoastaan siellä täällä kuuli koiran haukkuvan. Aamulla taas havahtui kukon kiekaisuun. Nyt todellakin oltiin maaseudulla.

Ja pikkukylän tunnelma — jopa aavemaisen hiljainen, silti sympaattinen. Kadut ammottivat tyhjyyttään niin aamulla, päivällä kuin illalla. Ja kun sitten vastaan tuli paikallinen, häntä tervehdittiin, tietenkin.

Sitten ne hitaat ja hulppeat aamiaiset, jotka nautittiin ulkona terassilla kissojen ja koirien kiehnätessä jaloissa. Ja uudet tuttavuudet, joiden kanssa juteltiin niitä näitä pitkän terassipöydän äärellä. Erityisesti mieleeni jäi se kiva englantilaispariskunta, jonka nainen oli viimeisillään raskaana. Ja jopa se negatiivisesti kaikkeen suhtautuva belgialainen eläkeläisnainen saa hymyn huulille. Hän, jota kauhistutti se, että olimme reissussa kaksikuukautisen vauvan kanssa. Silti naisen kasvoille piirtyi autenttinen hymy aina kun hän yhteisellä terassilla näki vauvamme.

Juuri tämänkaltaiset minilomat maalla riuhtovat irti arkirutiineista, joista vielä kaupunkilomalla yrittää tiukasti pitää kiinni (syö terveellisesti, ei viiniä, urheile). Pikkukylän autenttinen tunnelma ja luonnon äärellä rauhoittuminen takaavat, että siinä hetkessä elää paikkakunnan tapojen mukaisesti: aurinkohattu päässä nauttien hyvästä ruuasta ja juomasta ja uinuen siesta-aikana muiden kyläläisten tapaan.

So, our trip to Barcelona took an impulsive turn when we decided to escape the city and rent a car and drive somewhere in the countryside. Our only criterion was to go where they make cava (in that famous wine region Penedés).

First we arrived at this seaside holiday town called Sitges, where we had some coffee and fed the little one. I can easily imagine that Barcelonians come here to escape the busy city environment and to have more space to enjoy the sun on the beach and drink cocktails on the terrace.

Then we hopped in the car and got back on the road again. After an hour or so my husband found a romantic bed & breakfast in Torrelles de Foix.

And romantic it was; Arienella, the B&B place, was absolutely amazing. We got a beautiful room with a balcony. In the evening we watched the view over the countryside with fresh cava in our glasses. Could it be any better?

Then there was the silence, which you can only experience in the countryside; just every now and then you could hear a dog barking, or in the morning a rooster crowing.

And the unique atmosphere at the village. I got the impression that the place was permanently asleep! In the morning, day or evening — the streets rest silent and empty, like a ghost town. And when it was time to eat, the owner of the B&B called one of the restaurants to find out whether it was open. It is not certain, like in the city, that you can just go and eat or find a supermarket that is open.

And then there were those lazy mornings and big breakfasts that you could eat on the terrace or near the swimming pool while chilled-out music was playing in the background. And those friendly conversations with other guests, like that pregnant English couple. We set a good example of how you can travel with a little baby. Although, that did get some criticism from an old Belgian woman, who seemed to have a negative attitude to everything, or that was just her way of being.

Afterwards, I think these kinds of mini breaks in the countryside are necessary for your peace of mind. I mean, when you are on a city holiday, you always try to keep up your routines (or least I do) in some way or another, or you end up walking 15 kilometers every day — that really does not get you in a relaxing mood, does it? But in the countryside, that calmness does get to you after all; you adapt the rhythm of the village, sleep and eat well, and by accident you start to take those little siestas like the villagers do.
